Li Jiao (645-714)
I watch the autumn leaves unwind and fall—
Perhaps they’ll bloom an early springtime day
Or sail the river waves a thousand miles
To join ten thousand bamboo canes a-sway.
Jiě luò sān qiū yè
Néng kāi èr yuè huā
Guò jiāng qiān chǐ làng
Rù zhú wàn gān xié
Transliteration and Notes
Loosen fall three autumn leaves
Could open second month blossoms
Pass river thousand feet waves
Join bamboo ten-thousand canes slanting
Li Jiao served as Chancellor during the reigns of Empress Wu Zetian (title in dispute, but she had effective power as Empress), her sons, Emperor Zhongzong and Emperor Ruizong, and her grandson, Emperor Shang.
