Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer: “I know a hymn, giant and strange”

 A nice musical version:

My Translation
Rhyme 1
By Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer
I know a hymn, giant and strange,
that sounds the dawn of the night of souls,
and these pages are that hymn,
a rhythm of dilating air and shadows.
I wanted to write it, taming man
and his restive, paltry language
with words at once of
sighs and laughter, of colors and notes.
But the fight’s in vain, for no one
can catch him—there’s just “oh beautiful!”
if taking your hands in mine,
I could sing it to your ears alone.
Original Spanish
Rimas I
By Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer
suspiros y risas, colores y notas.
